Parting Shots Film and Animation Festival for High School Students

History

The Parting Shots Film and Animation Festival was the brainchild of Chris Schloemp of Montgomery High School and Rob Campbell of Elsie Allen High School, both in Santa Rosa. The original idea was to have a venue for the local student filmmakers to see and share the work of other filmmakers.

Since that first event in 2002, the festival has expanded its scope to all Sonoma County high schools and inviting filmmakers entries from throughout the North San Francisco Bay Area.

The festival certainly highlights the best of our Sonoma County high school student filmmakers and over the years, the quality and skill of the filmmakers has markedly increased. Many of these same filmmakers have also had their work shown in both statewide and national film festivals. We see the Parting Shots Film Festival as an opportunity to view the creativity and skill of young filmmakers.

How the Festival Works

Students are asked to choose a category in which to submit a film. The entries are then sent out to a team of judges, usually local professional filmmakers, television production personnel and media experts. The judges score the films in a particular entry category and the three highest rated films in each category are presented on the night of the festival.

At the conclusion of the screenings, the highest scoring piece in each category is announced and Certificates of Award are presented to the filmmakers as well as a cash prize. The representative schools are also presented with certificates.

Although there is not a time limit imposed on the length of submissions, for the smooth running of the festival we may only be able to show about six minutes of each entry. Thus, it behooves filmmakers to keep their entries to a length around six minutes if possible.
